Bahrain, Manama was the beginning of our trip around the Middle East in 2022. We spent 2 full days there and want to present our top things to do in Bahrain in such a short time. We arrived in Manama from Bangkok late in the evening and started sightseeing on the second day after getting fully rested and charged up for the new adventure.

Where Is Bahrain?
Bahrain, with its capital city Manama, is a tiny island nation nestled in the heart of the Persian Gulf. You can find this hidden gem tucked right between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Bahrain is actually the smallest country in the Middle East, making it super easy to explore.
Is Bahrain Worth Visiting? Our First Impressions
Instead of asking yourself whether Bahrain is worth visiting, the real question you should be asking is: when is the absolute soonest I can pack my bags and book my flights? Honestly, we loved Bahrain. We spent only 2 full days there but if we had had more time, we definitely wouldn’t have had any regrets. People in Bahrain were super nice, smiling and helpful. It felt safe to go for a walk and explore Manama even in the evening, and the atmosphere was amazing: the muezzins calling to prayer a couple of times during the day (I think the earliest was somewhere after 4am — not quite sure of the exact time, being half asleep :)), the Middle Eastern architecture, the white cars dominating the streets and looking more elegant, the omnipresent smell of perfumes and so much more!
Before going to Manama, we had come across the opinion that it’s a boring place. Maybe the island lacks world-class breathtaking attractions, but during our stay we didn’t get bored even for a minute. I think there are plenty of interesting things to do in Bahrain that will make you feel its unique atmosphere.
Things to Do in Bahrain: Our Top Picks
During our 2-day stay we got to see 6 attractions in Manama. I think we used our time to the fullest and really enjoyed the attractions we picked. If you are also planning a short stay in Manama or this is your stopover, our itinerary should be very helpful — you can simply follow our path and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
1. Bahrain World Trade Centre — Is It Worth Seeing?
Our first attraction was the Bahrain World Trade Centre. We got there by a Careem car via the mobile app. We could only admire the iconic wind-turbine towers from the outside. The modern architecture of these towers is interesting and it is nice to take a walk in the nearby well-kept park to admire them. Please keep in mind to avoid going there around noon — the sun is unbearable at that time and you won’t be able to stay long.
An interesting fact: although you can’t go up the Bahrain World Trade Centre as the towers are for private use only, it is possible to visit the bottom section, which features a premium shopping mall and several cafes.
2. Bahrain Fort — The Most Charming Part of Manama
We took a Careem car to get to Bahrain Fort. Luckily we decided to go there in the late afternoon and it was the perfect time. It’s an open space so I can’t imagine how hard it would be to sightsee when the sun is at its most intense.
Bahrain Fort is also known as Qal’at al-Bahrain and is actually located in the city of Karbabad, but it’s just around 5 km from Manama. The Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a must-see when in Manama. If you plan a short trip to Bahrain, I would suggest prioritizing this attraction. Exploring the Fort feels like stepping back in time and it’s definitely worth taking your time there. The best idea is to visit without time pressure — and as I mentioned, in the late afternoon, to sit down, relax and wait for the sunset over the ruins.
The amazing thing about the Fort is that you can see futuristic skyscrapers in the distance — it’s just as if you were looking at the future from the perspective of the ancient past.
At the time of our visit it was not crowded — actually far from it. There were only a couple of other visitors besides us. The best part is that walking around the massive fort is free of charge. However, there is also a modern museum next to the Fort for those who have more time to explore, and they charge a small entrance fee.
3. The Avenues Mall — Shopping Centre along the Bahrain Bay
Heading to the Avenues Mall is a great idea at lunchtime around noon when the sun is at its worst. You can escape the heat and relax over a meal. Inside there is a food court with a variety of choices but the best thing about the mall is its design — its architecture resembles an outdoor shopping street and is covered by a massive transparent roof.
This shopping centre is located right on the waterfront of Bahrain Bay and offers some of the best views of the city skyline. If you step outside to enjoy the views, you can spot the next attraction from there — tickets for the Bahrain Bay Cruise are available at a small ticket booth right on the promenade.
4. Bahrain Bay Cruise — What to Expect
You can easily buy tickets at the booth located on the promenade after leaving the mall. Although the ride is short (around 15 minutes), it is totally worth it. It’s a peaceful trip that can be taken at any time of day, as the fresh sea breeze and the boat roof let you forget about the heat easily. The cruise took us around the bay and we passed close to the Four Seasons private beach.
The cruise costs 3 BHD (around 8 USD) and departs around every 15 minutes.
5. Manama Skyline: Best Spots to Admire the City
The Manama skyline can be admired from a few spots: the boat cruise, the promenade and even from the ancient Bahrain Fort. Beyond the Fort and the cruise, it’s also worth mentioning that a walk along the promenade is a great attraction in itself — though again, it is better to go in the late afternoon or evening because of the sun.
Walking the promenade, you can enjoy the Manama skyline, and if you wish to spend more time there, head to one of the waterfront restaurants with outdoor seating to feel the relaxing sea breeze.
6. Bab Al Bahrain Souq — Manama Souq
Bab Al Bahrain Souq, also known as the Manama Souq, is a local market that comes alive in the evening. It was a fantastic experience to go there and feel the real atmosphere of the city. We entered through the historic Bab Al Bahrain gate and enjoyed a long walk through the narrow streets full of stalls selling souvenirs. We bought so many — we just couldn’t resist :) — the variety is incredible: colourful spices, local crafts, magnets, traditional sweets and so much more.

Where to Eat in Manama With a Local Vibe
We only spent 2 afternoons in Manama and both times we ate at the Avenues Mall food court, which we can recommend — probably the best cheaper option compared to the promenade restaurants. There is a good variety of choices and the food reminded us of Middle Eastern fast food — simple and very tasty.
There is also a small market inside the mall where you can buy snacks, water or some local sweets.
Where to Stay in Bahrain — Our Experience
In Bahrain we went for a budget option — we booked a 3-night stay at the Oriental Palace Hotel. It is a good budget choice, however keep in mind that in Bahrain it’s easy to upgrade your stay for a small extra cost. Our breakfasts were very basic, but the hotel was nice and clean and the staff was helpful. The big advantage was its location — within walking distance of Bab Al Bahrain Souq, so we went there twice during our short stay to enjoy our evenings and soak in the local atmosphere.
Getting Around Bahrain: Is It Easy?
Walking around Manama is easy but only once the sun goes down. The city feels bustling and safe, even after dark. Whenever we needed to get somewhere, we used the Careem app to book a car, which always went smoothly.
How Many Days Do You Need in Bahrain?
I think 2 full days in Manama is enough, especially if you want to see the main attractions. There are plenty of interesting things to do in Bahrain, but Bahrain Fort and the Manama Souq are the two I would never skip :)
Bahrain as a Couple vs Bahrain With Kids: Our Thoughts
We visited Bahrain as a couple, one year before our son was born, but I really think it’s one of the best destinations also for families with kids, even small ones. In most places a stroller would be fine — I’m just not sure about Bahrain Fort specifically. All the other places seem easy to navigate with one for sure. Besides, locals are friendly, the food is tasty and it’s not overcrowded. We would only need to be more careful about the intense heat with a little one.
Is Bahrain Safe to Visit?
Bahrain was definitely a safe place to visit. Locals are welcoming, friendly and even smiling at you on the streets. During our entire stay we didn’t encounter a single uncomfortable situation. Whenever we needed help, locals seemed open and happy to assist. This is a huge advantage if you plan to go there with kids. The traffic also felt calmer than in many other cities we’d visited — no crazy congestion or chaos.
However, our stay took place in 2022, and since February 2026 the situation in the Middle East region has changed. I highly recommend checking and monitoring up-to-date travel warnings before booking your trip.

2 full days are enough to see the main attractions of Manama. We managed to visit 6 places without feeling rushed. If you want to explore more or prefer a slower pace, 3 days would be ideal — especially if you plan to add a day trip outside the city.

In our experience — absolutely yes. We felt safe walking the streets even in the evening, locals were friendly and helpful, and we never encountered anything uncomfortable. That said, our trip was in 2022 and the situation in the Middle East has changed since then, so always check current travel advisories before booking.

100% yes — and honestly more than we expected. We went there with low expectations after reading that it’s “boring” and came back completely surprised. The atmosphere, the Fort, the Souq, the bay cruise — all of it together creates something really unique. Give it a chance, especially if you’re passing through the region.

Bahrain is known for being one of the most liberal and open countries in the Gulf region, its ancient history (Bahrain Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and pearl diving — which was the backbone of the local economy for centuries. Can you visit Bahrain with kids?
We think so — and we’d genuinely consider it a great family destination. Locals are warm, the city feels safe, the food is good and most attractions are manageable with small children. The only thing to plan carefully is the heat — avoid being outside around noon and you’ll be fine.
What is the best time to visit Bahrain?
We visited in October and the temperatures were very manageable for sightseeing. Generally, October through April is considered the best time to visit — warm and pleasant rather than the extreme heat of the summer months. Avoid July and August if you can.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Bahrain
We had so much fun in Bahrain and we would definitely want to go back there one day. We enjoyed exploring the local attractions and bought many souvenirs that we love to look at now and recall this trip. The local vibe was amazing — the Middle Eastern architecture, listening to the call to prayer a couple of times a day, white and tan cars and the pervasive scent of strong Arabian perfumes (if you love perfumes it’s gonna be your paradise, otherwise you might easily get a headache :)). All in all, our experience was super positive and we were happy to head to our next destination around the Middle East — Kuwait.
